An excerpt from the January 30 Huntington Post story titled “Florida Highway Accident Kills 10 Near Gainesville” :
At least a dozen cars, six tractor-trailers and a motorhome collided at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday. Some cars were crushed under the bellies of big rigs. Others burst into flames and sent metal shrapnel flying through the air, horrifying witnesses watching the violence along Interstate 75 in calls to 911. Eighteen survivors were hospitalized.
In a 911 recording released Monday, a driver and her passengers told a dispatcher that the fog and smoke from the 62-acre brush fire was so thick they couldn’t see.
A January 29 story seen at Gainesville.com, titled “Witness tells horrific story of fatal crashes on Interstate 75 near Gainesville” said of the accident:
Area officials called it the worst interstate tragedy in North Central Florida in decades.
The wreckage recalled images of roadside bombings in Iraq and Afghanistan — burned-out hulks of semitrailer trucks, cars that were so badly immolated that their make could not be determined, rubber burned away so that only charred rims rested on the melted asphalt.
The story also quoted one person involved in the accident as saying of the accident scene:
“It looked like the end of the world.”
