On Thursday, an accident on Interstate 294 (Tri-State) involved 5 vehicles and injured three people. The accident occurred just north of 47th Street.
The accident happened at approximately 2:45 p.m. The accident was caused by a tire that came off a trailer being pulled by a pickup truck that was traveling south on Interstate 294 at 70 mph.
The tire flew across four lanes of traffic, causing the accident. According to Hinsdale firefighter/paramedic Steve Tullis, the tire crossed over into the northbound lanes before bouncing back into the southbound lanes. Two of the vehicles involved were semi-trucks.
Sgt. Nick Hasan of the Illinois State Police confirmed that the tire crossed the median and struck vehicles traveling northbound.
According to Tullis, three injured people were transported to area hospitals with minor injuries.
