School Bus Involved In Beach Park Accident

There was a collision involving a school bus and two semi trucks Wednesday (January 20, 2016) in Beach Park.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the accident happened at the intersection of Green Bay Road and Major Avenue.  The Sheriff’s Office received a call regarding the crash at 3:04 p.m.

The accident involved a school bus (Kenneth Murphy Elementary School Bus 15) being “rear-ended” by a semi truck as the school bus was stopped in traffic.  Due to the impact, the school bus was pushed (i.e. “sandwiched”) into a semi truck in front of it.

At the time of the crash, the school bus had 56 children on board.  Of the 56 children, 9 were taken to  Vista Medical Center East and West for treatment of their accident injuries, which were considered to be non-life-threatening in nature.

An excerpt from the Lake County News-Sun article (with video) titled “9 children hospitalized in Beach Park school bus crash“:

Annabele, 7, said everyone on the bus was thrown forward on first impact and knocked backward on second impact. She said she hit her head on the seat in front of her but was not feeling hurt.

Media sources don’t mention as to whether seat belts were used in the bus.

Neither truck driver was injured during the accident.

Another excerpt from the Lake County News-Sun article mentioned above, quoting Detective Christopher Covelli of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office:

The driver of the truck that crashed into the bus, Milos Ostojic, 55, of the 900 block of Clark Drive in Gurnee, has been charged with failing to reduce speed to avoid an accident, driving without proof of insurance and not having a driver’s license on him, Covelli said.

Bus Fire In Deerfield, Illinois

One of the possible hazards that can happen to motorists and passengers is when a car or vehicle fire occurs.  While these incidents are somewhat rare, they can happen for a variety of reasons.

An example of a bus fire was seen today (June 4, 2014) in Deerfield, Illinois.

The fire occurred on a charter bus that was carrying 54 Indiana school children and their chaperones to Six Flags Great America in Gurnee.  As the bus was traveling on the Tristate Tollway (I-94) near Deerfield Road in Deerfield, the driver of the bus, identified as Walter Lay, heard a “pop” around 11:10 a.m.  Realizing that a rear tire on the bus had blown, the bus driver exited onto Deerfield Road.

An excerpt from the June 4, 2014 Deerfield Review article titled “No injuries after bus catches fire near Deerfield” :

“The blowout caused a mechanical problem, which caused a fire,” said Deerfield Bannockburn Fire Protection District Deputy Chief Ray Larson. “The fire spread into the cabin of the bus.”

Everyone that was on the bus was able to be evacuated before smoke or fire was able to enter the cabin of the bus.  No one was injured during this bus fire.

As seen in pictures of the bus, the amount of smoke emanating from the bus was significant.

Additional details and possible updates concerning this Lake County bus fire can be seen in a variety of media sources including the Deerfield Review article mentioned above, as well as the June 4 Highland Park & Deerfield TribLocal article titled “No injuries in Deerfield charter bus fire.”
