Driver Revived From Opioid Overdose On Route 41

Vehicle accidents in which a driver is driving while impaired on drugs (illegal or prescription) are becoming increasingly common.  There have been many such accidents in the Chicago area, with some causing fatalities.

Various aspects of such “drugged driving” accidents, including those that have occurred in Lake County, are further discussed on the “Car Accidents Involving Drivers Under The Influence Of Drugs” page.

An early-morning incident on July 25, 2017 in which an alleged drug-impaired driver was reported to be driving on Route 41 in unincorporated Gurnee (Newport Township) is discussed in the July 25, 2017 Lake County News-Sun article titled “Waukegan man suffers opioid overdose behind the wheel, officials say” as well as the July 25 Grayslake Patch article titled “Lake County Deputies Revive Unconscious, Opioid-Overdosed Driver Cruising Route 41.”

An excerpt from the Grayslake Patch article:

Deputies revived an unresponsive driver Tuesday after he overdosed on opioids while cruising down Route 41, where he caused an accident and a bit of commotion.

Lake County Sheriff’s deputies were called just after midnight on Tuesday to Route 41 and Searns School Road in unincorporated Gurnee for a report of a reckless driver. A witness following the driver of a Dodge Charger who was northbound on Route 41 said he was unable to stay in his lane.

The driver was identified as a 54-year-old man from Waukegan.  His car’s tires and rims were badly damaged when the Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrived.

Two excerpts from the Lake County News-Sun article:

This marks the third time this year a person has been found by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office unresponsive in a vehicle because of an overdose, Sgt. Christopher Covelli said, pointing to a January crash where a driver was found unresponsive, and a March incident where a vehicle was found on the roadway with its driver unconscious.

The intention is to charge the man with driving under the influence and other traffic-related offenses at that point, Covelli said, adding that since he has not been formally charged yet, the Sheriff’s Office was not releasing his name.
