There was a fatal Lake County train accident last night (January 22, 2014) in Round Lake Park.
The train collision involved a Metra train hitting a Range Rover SUV shortly after 6 p.m. The collision happened at a railroad crossing near Route 134 and Porter Drive.
An excerpt from the Lake County News-Sun article of January 23, 2014, titled “Metra train hits vehicle in Round Lake, one killed” :
Milwaukee District / North Line train No. 2129 struck the vehicle about 6 p.m., Metra spokesman Tom Miller said.
The vehicle may have gone around downed crossing gates, and at least one person was reported killed, Miller said, citing preliminary information.
It was later reported that both occupants of the SUV were killed during this train accident. They have been identified as Francisco Carranza and his daughter, Alyssa Carranza, 7.

His body was found in the wreckage on Wednesday around 8 p.m. after the crash. Police said Alyssa’s body was thrown from the SUV and into the snowbank. Both died of “multiple traumatic injuries,” according to the Lake County medical examiner, and “alcohol was involved.” Carranza was above the legal limit for alcohol, the ME said.
