There was an accident today (Thursday, May 16) on Route 31 in Crystal Lake, Illinois.

According to Crystal Lake Police, the driver told them his brakes failed as he was driving northbound on Route 31 at approximately 4:27 p.m. The driver jumped from the car; the car then crashed into a utility box near Route 31 and Brighton Lane.

The driver, Evan T. Hoeltje, 21, of McHenry, Illinois was taken to a local hospital, having suffered minor injuries.

There was a fatal bicycling accident today in unincorporated Lake Villa, Illinois.

The woman who died following the accident has been identified as Anna Harvey, 34, of Lindenhurst, Illinois.

According to one media source on the accident, the Chicago Tribune article of May 2, 2013, titled “Bicyclist killed in Lake County accident” :

At about 2:15 p.m., a 2000 Toyota Camry traveling southbound on Route 45, north of Grand Avenue in unincorporated Lake Villa, collided with the Harvey who also traveling southbound on Route 45, according to a statement from the Lake County Sheriff’s department.

She was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, Illinois, where she was pronounced dead.

The driver of the Toyota was not injured during the accident.

Fatal Car Accident In Unincorporated Mundelein, Illinois

There was a fatal car accident on Tuesday morning, April 30, in unincorporated Mundelein. The accident happened when a vehicle crossed the center line on Gilmer Road, north of Erhart Road, and struck a vehicle traveling in the opposite direction.

According to Lake County Sheriff personnel, Mary Kay Affrunti, 60, of Buffalo Grove was driving the car that crossed the center line. She was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where she died of her injuries at 7:17 a.m.

The driver of the other vehicle sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center.

A third vehicle that swerved to avoid the accident hit a tree, but the driver of this third vehicle was not injured.

The April 5 school bus accident on Route 173 (which was summarized in the April 5 blog post titled “School Bus Accident On Route 173 In Lake County, Illinois“) has highlighted the issue of dangerous intersections in Lake County.

An April 25 Lake County News-Sun article, titled “Bus accident sheds light on dangerous intersections” highlights intersections in Lake County that have experienced numerous accidents and fatalities.

It identifies the intersection at which the school bus accident occurred – at Route 173 and Kilbourne Road near Wadsworth – as having 53 crashes and one fatality between 2004 and 2011.

It further discusses other accident-prone intersections, including the following:

The intersection of Dilleys and Wadsworth roads has had the highest number of incidents, with 42 crashes and 33 injuries from 2007 to 2011, according to IDOT. The heavily-trafficked two-way stop sign intersection is about 5 miles away from 173/Kilbourne.

Fatal Auto Accident In Gurnee, Illinois

There was a fatal car accident in Gurnee, Illinois on April 15, 2013. The accident happened near Greenleaf Street and Oglesby Avenue at approximately 2:00 p.m.

According to Gurnee Police, a 2003 Saturn station wagon was traveling southbound on Greenleaf, when it made a sharp left turn in front of a van also traveling southbound. The vehicles collided, with the van striking the driver’s side of the station wagon.

Junior J. Brewer, 82, of Zion, and his wife Edna L. Ezell-Brewer, 80 were taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center. Junior Brewer died at the hospital; his wife’s condition is unknown.

The driver of the van, Robert P. Denz Jr., 54, of Mundelein, was treated for minor injuries at Advocate Condell Medical Center.

The accident remains under investigation.
