Today (January 27, 2014) the Illinois Department of Transportation issued a news release titled “IDOT Warns Motorists of Dangerous Driving Conditions and Advises Not to Travel in Northern Illinois.” The news release notifies motorists of dangerous road conditions in the Northern Illinois region, including snow and ice-covered roads, as well as wind gusts that are creating “whiteout conditions.”
The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) announced today that road conditions are slick and dangerous in Northern Illinois, and motorists should only travel if absolutely necessary. Currently, the majority of roads in the Northern part of the state are snow and ice covered with wind gusts as high as 30 mph, creating whiteout conditions.
“With whiteout conditions in the Northern part of the state, IDOT recommends that motorists avoid travel until conditions improve,” said Illinois Transportation Secretary Ann L. Schneider. “In addition to clearing snow and ice from roads and bridges, IDOT has emergency crews on the job assisting law enforcement and emergency personnel from other state agencies to help remove vehicles from ditches and rescue stranded motorists.”
The news release also contains a variety of “Other safety tips to remember” with regard to winter driving, especially in snowy and very cold conditions, and how to minimize the potential for car crashes.
Additional details can be seen in the above-mentioned news release.
