Illinois Crash Fatalities In 2013

Today, the Chicago Tribune published an article titled “Traffic deaths in Illinois rise for second straight year.”  The article discusses Illinois fatal car accident statistics and Illinois fatal vehicle accident trends.

Notable excerpts include:

Traffic deaths on Illinois roads rose slightly for a second straight year in 2013, according to preliminary data from the Illinois Department of Transportation.

As of New Year’s Eve, there were 973 crash fatalities in 2013 compared with 956 fatalities in 2012, a nearly 2 percent increase. That uptick adds to a 4 percent rise last year, when the death toll of 956 compared with 918 in 2011.

But deaths on Illinois roadways are still much lower than they have been historically, with 2013 the fifth consecutive year that fatalities were below 1,000, a dramatic low compared with the past nine decades.

also:

The state’s data include not only deaths involving vehicles, but those involving pedestrians and cyclists. Adkins said that crash fatalities in recent years have been on a steady decline nationally — except for a spike in 2012 — but deaths involving pedestrians and cyclists are on the rise.

“More people are walking, biking, using motorcycles, and as a result, the exposure to risk is going up and the fatalities are going up,” Adkins said. “We’re seeing that nationally.”

Additional details can be seen in the above-referenced Chicago Tribune article.  As well, the CBS Chicago article of December 30 also has commentary in a story titled “Traffic Deaths On Illinois Roadways Increase In 2013.”

For a long-term history (1920-2012) of Illinois annual fatal vehicle accidents, the Illinois Department of Transportation publishes a page titled “Illinois Crash Fatalities:  1920-2012
