Man Killed In Palatine, Illinois When Commuter Train Hits His Car

Today, a fatal accident occurred in Palatine, Illinois when a commuter train collided with a car at a railway crossing.

The accident happened at around 7:30 a.m., according to Palatine police.

The inbound Metra express train was carrying around 200 passengers, and traveling at 50-75 m.p.h. at the time of impact with the car, according to Palatine Fire Battalion Chief William Gabrenya.  The train pushed the car about a quarter-mile before coming to a stop.

The car’s driver, Michael Levgard, 64, of Palatine was pronounced dead at the scene, Palatine police said.

The train hit the car near North Brockway Street and pushed it to Palatine Road. The car was northbound on Brockway when the inbound Metra commuter train struck it.

Authorities believe Levgard ignored the train crossing warnings and went around the gates before being struck by the train.  Levgard was the only person in the car.
