Metra Train Hits SUV At Route 22 Off Of Waukegan Road

On Tuesday morning, a Lake Forest resident had his SUV hit by a Metra Train at the crossing at Route 22, just off of Waukegan Road.

Michael Bungert, 57, had just turned onto Route 22 after traveling southbound on Waukegan Road at approximately 7:30 a.m.   He apparently misinterpreted where the travel lane was in the construction zone, and crossed a solid white line and drove between two barrels.  He then found himself on the railroad tracks, and behind parked vehicles belonging to construction personnel.

As he started to back up, he heard the bells from the railroad gates sound.  Realizing the Metra train was coming at him, he “floored” the accelerator and the SUV was able to mostly clear the railroad tracks.  However, the Metra train hit the far rear of his SUV.

Bungert was taken to Highland Park Hospital, and then released after being treated.  He was given two tickets stemming from the accident.
