Fatal Warren Township Crash Involving “Head-On Collision”

There was a fatal Warren Township crash that involved a “head-on collision” on Saturday (July 28, 2018) afternoon.  The driver who died was identified as a 70-year-old woman from Grayslake.

According to information provided by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, in a July 29, 2018 media release titled “Critical Warren Township Crash,” Sheriff’s Deputies went to the accident scene at approximately 4:35 p.m.  The accident occurred on Route 45 north of West Cottage Avenue.

An excerpt from the media release:

Preliminary investigation shows a 2011 Kia Soul, driven by a male juvenile of Round Lake Beach, was traveling northbound on Route 45.  For an unknown reason, the driver of the Kia crossed the double-yellow center lane divider and entered the southbound lane of traffic.  The Kia Soul struck a southbound 2003 Toyota Corolla, driven by a 70-year-old female of Grayslake.

The driver of the Toyota, later identified as Katherine Lewis, died after being taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville.

The driver of the Kia suffered accident injuries that were considered to be non-life-threatening in nature.  That driver was also taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center.

A small fire started in the engine compartment of the Toyota following the crash.

This fatal Warren Township crash remains under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.

Speed Awareness Day And Statistics Regarding Speed And Accidents

“Speed Awareness Day” is July 25, 2018.   Lake County is participating in this speed-reduction effort.

Sheriff Mark Curran is reminding motorists that Wednesday, July 25, 2018 is Speed Awareness Day. Expanded traffic safety patrols will be visible throughout the county to remind motorists to drive within the speed limit.

This “Speed Awareness Day” safety campaign has published a variety of statistics related to speed and crashes.  Among these statistics are the following, as seen on the “Residential Facts On Speeding” page:

  • When a pedestrian is hit by a car at 20 MPH, there is a 10% likelihood of being killed; at a speed of 30 MPH, the percentage increases to a 50% likelihood of being killed.
  • The higher the speed at impact, the more severe the injuries sustained.
  • 37% of the speed-related crashes result in injuries.
  • When speeding, there is a greater chance that other road users will misjudge how fast you are traveling.
  • Speeding extends the distance required to stop a vehicle in emergency situations.
  • Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to navigate safely around curves or objects in the roadway.

  • The probability of death, disfigurement, or debilitating injury grows with higher speed at impact.  Such consequences double for every 10 mph over 50 mph.
  • In 2016 speed accounted for 32.2% of all crashes

  • In 2016 speed accounted for 37.8% of injury crashes
  • In 2016 there was a total of 1078 fatalities on our roadways

Fatal Antioch Township Motorcycle Accident July 13, 2018

There was a fatal Antioch Township motorcycle accident early Friday (July 13, 2018) morning.  Based on preliminary accident investigation findings, this Lake County motorcycle accident appears to have involved a motorcycle loss of control that involved the motorcycle leaving the roadway and crashing.

An excerpt regarding the crash, from the July 13, 2018 Lake County Sheriff’s Department media release titled “Fatal Antioch Township Motorcycle Crash“:

On July 13, 2018, at approximately 5:15AM, Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the area of West Grass Lake Road and Kathryn Drive, Antioch Township, for a report of a motorcycle down.  Sheriff’s Deputies arrived and located a 1999 Honda Motorcycle on the south side of the roadway.  After a brief search for the driver, he (an adult male of Lake Villa Township – identification pending notification of next of kin) was located in the tree line near the motorcycle, deceased.

According to the release, findings from the preliminary accident investigation of this fatal Antioch Township motorcycle accident indicates that it occurred as the motorcycle was traveling eastbound on Grass Lake Road, just west of Kathryn Drive, when the bike left the roadway to the east.  After leaving the roadway, the motorcycle struck a tree and the motorcyclist was seriously injured.  It appears as if the reason for the apparent loss of control has yet to be determined.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office will be conducting an autopsy.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit is conducting the accident investigation.

Newport Township Motorcycle Accident Leads To Fatal Injuries

There was a fatal Newport Township motorcycle accident on Wednesday (July 11, 2018) afternoon.  A preliminary investigation indicates that the collision involved a Jeep making a left-hand turn immediately in front of an oncoming motorcycle, which is one of the most common reasons for motorcycle accidents.  As seen in many Illinois motorcycle accidents, many of which have been summarized on this site, this type of motorcycle accident often leads to serious accident injuries, and in many cases leads to the motorcyclist (and passenger, if applicable) suffering fatal injuries.

The collision between a Jeep Compass and Yamaha motorcycle occurred at the intersection of North Kilbourne Road and Route 173.  Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the accident at approximately 2:15 p.m.

The motorcycle accident is discussed in the July 11, 2018 Lake County Sheriff’s Office media release titled “Fatal Newport Township Car vs. Motorcycle Crash.”  An excerpt:

Preliminary investigation shows a 1999 Yamaha Motorcycle, driven by a male adult (positive identification pending), was traveling southbound on Kilbourne Road, approaching Route 173.  A 2008 Jeep Compass, driven by a 69-year-old female of Gurnee was traveling northbound on Kilbourne Road, also approaching Route 173.  The driver of the Jeep made a left turn at the intersection, in front of the motorcycle.  The motorcycle collided with the vehicle and the driver of the motorcycle was ejected.

The motorcyclist was injured and was pronounced dead after being taken to St. Catherine’s Medical Center in Pleasant Prairie, WI. The Jeep’s driver was not injured during the collision.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit is conducting the accident investigation of this Newport Township motorcycle accident.

Lake County Sheriff’s Duputy Was Involved In A Collision In Hainesville

A Lake County Sheriff’s Duputy was involved in a collision early Friday (June 29, 2018) morning in Hainesville.  One driver was injured as a result of the crash.

According to information provided by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the accident involved a collision between the squad car and another vehicle.

An excerpt regarding the crash, from the June 29, 2018 Chicago Sun-Times article titled “Driver hurt in crash with Lake County Sheriff’s squad car in Hainesville“:

A deputy with the sheriff’s K-9 Unit was driving a squad car south on Hainseville Road about 4:40 a.m. when it was hit by a vehicle that was westbound on Washington Street, according to the sheriff’s office spokesman Sgt. Christopher Covelli. The deputy was on his way to a missing person investigation in another village and the squad car’s emergency lights were on at the time.

The driver of the car that collided with the squad car was injured during the collision, and taken to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville for treatment of accident injuries.  Those injuries were considered to be non-life-threatening in nature.

The Sheriff’s Duputy as well as the police dog were not injured.

The accident investigation is being conducted by the Grayslake Police Department.
