Train Traffic And Safety Issues In Grayslake, Illinois

The Lake County News-Sun published an article on November 11 titled “Grayslake calls for federal help with train safety hazards.”

The article discusses various issues regarding traffic congestion and safety issues caused by long trains that are slow or stopped in Grayslake, and efforts by the Village of Grayslake to remedy the problems.

A couple of excerpts:

Grayslake leaders said they are peeved at long freight trains that frequently tie up downtown traffic and create a safety hazard. And they want the federal government to remedy the problem because it involves a Canadian company.

also, it quotes Grayslake Police Chief Phil Perlini as saying:

“Every time a train is stopped, our police unit emergency response is delayed, sometimes by a minute or two, but often well over five or 10 minutes,” the chief said.

“Twice we have had a train versus car crash at the Route 120 and Route 83 crossings and our own units had to drive out of our jurisdiction to get to the scene, causing several minutes of delay,” he added. I cannot think of one day that has gone by where someone’s response to a call, emergency or not, was not delayed by a stopped freight train.”
