While scrolling through her cell phone’s contact list while driving, a woman struck a man in Rolling Meadows while he was changing a tire on the shoulder.
The accident happened on Monday, August 1 on Illinois Highway 53, at about 7:30 p.m.
According to Illinois State Police Trooper Cordell Turner, the woman, Kelly Luch, 23, of Buffalo Grove, was driving north in the left lane when she drifted to the right and clipped a vehicle just south of Kirchoff Road in Rolling Meadows. She then overcorrected to the left, thereby smashing into the rear of a Ford F-150 pickup truck that was parked on the shoulder. The 39-year-old Hawthorn Woods man that was changing a tire was crushed between the truck and the median.
According to officials at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital yesterday afternoon, the man was in critical condition. Although his injuries appeared non-life threatening at the accident scene, a nurse at the hospital later told police the man suffered serious spinal and abdominal injuries.
According to Turner, after Luch disclosed that she was looking at her phone’s contact list at the time of the accident, she was cited with text messaging while driving, improper lane usage and improperly driving on the shoulder.
