Driving while intoxicated continues to be a major national traffic problem. The subject of drug use and driver impairment is further discussed on the “Car Accidents Involving Drivers Under The Influence Of Drugs” page.

A January 14, 2019 “Police Blotter” article seen in the Highland Park Patch summarizes a number of alleged driving while intoxicated incidents in Highland Park. Of the three incidents summarized, two involved drivers who were charged with driving under the influence of alcohol.

The third incident involved a driver who was charged with driving under the influence of drugs. His vehicle left the roadway.

Additional details regarding driving while intoxicated and other types of driver impairment can be seen in the sources mentioned above.

Driving While Impaired Alleged In Deerfield “Hit & Run” Accident

Driving while impaired, as well as that throughout Illinois, continues to be pose a hazard to traffic safety. As seen in many Lake County accidents, many involve drunk drivers. On this site, alcohol-impaired driving accidents are summarized in posts found under the DUI category.  As seen in those posts, these crashes often result in serious injuries, and some result in fatalities.

As well, many accidents in which there is driving while impaired also involve the driver leaving the accident scene, i.e. a “hit & run.” A drunk driver may choose to leave the accident scene to try to avoid blame for the accident.

The December 31, 2018 Deerfield Patch article titled “Drunk Driver Leaves License Plate Behind After Hit-And-Run: Cops” discusses a November 16, 2018 accident in which the driver was allegedly driving while impaired and involved in an accident. The accident involved a car “rear-ending” another car, which in turn led to a “chain-reaction” crash. The allegedly drunk driver then left the accident scene.

An excerpt from the article:

A Deerfield man accused of fleeing the scene of a drunken traffic crash last month faces a pair of felony DUI charges after leaving pieces of his license plate behind, according to police reports.

Additional details regarding this Lake County accident involving alleged driving while impaired by alcohol can be seen in the article mentioned above.

Beach Park Car Crash Involving Damage To House

A Beach Park car crash occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, December 29, 2018. The accident appears to involve a loss of vehicle control. According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, alcohol appears to be a factor in this Beach Park car crash.

According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, in a December 29, 2018 media release titled “Beach Park Car Versus Home Crash Investigation,” Sheriff’s Deputies first went to the accident scene, which was a house in the 10000 block of West Yorkhouse Road, at approximately 1:00 a.m.

An excerpt from the media release:

Preliminary investigation shows a 2007 Chrysler Sebring, driven by a 19-year-old female of Waukegan, was traveling eastbound on Yorkhouse Road in the area of Geraghty Street.  For an unknown reason, the driver of Chrysler left the roadway and crashed into an unoccupied home, causing extensive damage.  The home was deemed uninhabitable due to the damage caused by the crash.  The driver was able to walk away from the car and go to a nearby home to ask for assistance.  She was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries.  She was the only occupant in the vehicle at the time of the crash.  Alcohol does appear to be a factor in the crash.

The accident investigation for this Beach Park car crash is being conducted by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit.

Another excerpt from the media release:

Sheriff John Idleburg reminds the community, “Alcohol and operating a vehicle don’t mix.  If you’ve been drinking, don’t risk getting behind the wheel.  Find an alternative method to get to where you’re going – it’s simply not worth risking your life and the life of others.”

Additional details and possible updates concerning this Beach Park car accident can be seen in a variety of media sources, including the media release mentioned above as well as the December 29 NBC Chicago article titled “Waukegan Woman, 19, Injured in Possible Alcohol-Related Beach Park Home Crash: Police.”

Lake County Drunk Driving That Leads To Accidents

On this site, alcohol-impaired driving accidents are summarized in posts found under the DUI category.  As seen in those posts, these crashes often result in serious injuries, and some result in fatalities. [Another source that discusses various alleged Lake County drunk driving incidents is the July 9, 2018 Lake Forest Patch article titled “Hit-And-Run Drunk Driver Had Over Triple Legal Limit: LF Blotter.”]

Drunk driving is often prevalent during holiday periods. The Illinois Department of Transportation has issued a media release on December 27, 2018 titled “Remain the life of the party, drive sober” with regard to drunk driving over the New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day holiday.

Notable excerpts include:

“Last year, six people died on our roads over New Year’s, and four of those deaths were alcohol-related,” said Cynthia Watters, IDOT’s bureau chief of Safety Programs and Engineering. “It’s everyone’s responsibility to make good decisions before getting behind the wheel. It really is a matter of life or death — yours as well as others.”

The holiday campaign features the familiar “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click It or Ticket” messages. In addition to DUI and seat belt offenders, law enforcement will show zero tolerance for speeding, distracted driving and other offenses.

Also included in the media release are suggestions for safe driving over the New Year’s holiday period.
