On Tuesday (April 20, 2021) evening there was a fatal backover accident in Unincorporated Barrington. This fatal backover accident involved a pickup truck rolling over a 18-month old boy on a driveway.
This fatal backover accident is discussed in a variety of media sources, including the April 20, 2021 Lake County Sheriff’s Office article titled “Tragic Vehicle Accident Claims Life of Toddler in Unincorporated Barrington.” An excerpt:
Further investigation revealed the incident occurred in the 25600 block of West Drake Road, Unincorporated Barrington. Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives and members of the Sheriff’s Technical Crash Investigations Team responded to the scene.
Preliminary investigation shows the toddler’s father, a 48-year-old male (of the same address on Drake Road), entered his Chevrolet pickup truck, which was parked in his driveway. At this time the toddler was outside in the vicinity of his mother and other siblings. The toddler was standing approximately 50 feet away from the pickup truck when his father entered the pickup. Just before the father began backing down the driveway the toddler ran toward the pickup, which nobody saw. The father began backing up then turned the pickup, so he could pull forward out of the driveway. This caused one of the front tires of the pickup to roll over the toddler.
The boy was taken to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital by his parents. He was subsequently pronounced deceased.
This fatal accident is being investigated by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Team and Lake County Coroner’s Office.
The Daily Herald had an article that also discussed this accident. That April 21 article is titled “Barrington-area toddler killed when hit by pickup truck backing out of family driveway.” This article also provides various tips on how to avoid this type of accident.
The article also points out that “More than 60% of backovers involve larger vehicles like trucks and SUVs…”
Drivers of these larger vehicles may be more prone to be involved in these driveway accidents because the vehicles are higher and may have more blind spots. These factors can make it harder to see small children on the driveway.
