Gurnee Vehicle Collision Leads To Fatality And Injuries

A Gurnee vehicle collision occurred Thursday (March 5, 2020) afternoon. This Gurnee vehicle collision was a “head-on collision” which led to the death of one person and injured two people.

The vehicles involved were a 2002 GMC Envoy and a 2013 Toyota Sienna, and the accident scene was in the area of Washington Street and Cemetery Road. Gurnee Police were called to the accident scene at approximately 4:50 p.m. As is often the case in “head-on collisions” the crash occurred after one vehicle crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming vehicle.

According to early investigation, the GMC was being driven eastbound on Washington Street, east of Cemetery Road, by a 71-year-old man while a 69-year-old woman from Lake Villa was a passenger in the SUV, the news release said. The GMC crossed the center lane and hit a Toyota being driven westbound on Washington Street by a 37-year-old Grayslake woman head-on, according to police.

The female passenger in the GMC was declared dead at the accident scene. She was later identified by the Lake County Coroner as Joan Lowry, 69, of Lindenhurst. According to the autopsy, she died from blunt force injuries suffered due to the vehicle accident.

The male driver was injured and taken to the hospital for treatment of his accident injuries.

The driver and sole occupant of the Toyota was injured and taken to the hospital for medical treatment.

The accident investigation is being conducted and included involvement by the Major Crash Assistance Team (MCAT).
