Officers arrived at the scene of a one-car crash in the area of North Bonnie Brook Lane and North Lewis Avenue around 10:45 p.m. on the night of the July Fourth holiday, according to Waukegan police.
Investigators believe a black 2008 Ford Fusion was speeding east on North Bonnie Brook Lane when the driver lost control and struck a tree. Alcohol and speeding are both thought to have contributed to the crash, according to police.

The passenger in the car, identified only as a North Chicago man in his 20s, was pronounced dead after being taken to the hospital. He was later identified as Javier Ocampo, 22. According to the Lake County Coroner, he died from multiple blunt force injuries resulting from the accident.
The driver, identified as a Highland Park man in his 20s, was injured. He was taken into custody and may face criminal charges related to this Waukegan car wreck.

The dangers of driving at excessive speed are discussed on the “Speed As An Accident Cause And The Potential For Serious Injuries” page. As discussed on that page, driving at excessive speeds not only makes a crash more likely, but it also increases the probability that accident injuries will be serious, if not fatal, in nature.
